How to Join
Our Membership
Any adult performer who is a high school graduate with above-average playing skills, especially sightreading ability, is eligible to audition for the Charlotte Concert Band. Currently the CCB is over 75 members strong, but new members are always welcome. The CCB is much like a university symphonic band in that there are many outstanding players, some of whom play professionally, but there are also dedicated amateurs who enjoy performing and make a great contribution within their sections. We have performed for the North Carolina Music Educators Conference (2008) and for the Stanly County Arts Council Concert Series (2011). You can find recordings of recent performances on YouTube.
The Music
Our concerts generally include some challenging concert band classics, such as the Suite in F by Holst, Clifton Williams's Symphonic Dance No. 3, Festive Overture by Shostakovich or Robert Jager's Esprit de Corps, as well as Broadway medleys, jazz standards and marches to make up an enjoyable program for our audiences. We feature vocal and instrument soloists to highlight the many talents of our members and present an annual "Young People's Concert" to encourage area school children to participate in instrumental music. You can see a representative list of our classic concert band repertoire on the "About Us" page.
Rehearsals
The Charlotte Concert Band rehearses on Tuesday nights from 7:30p-9:30p in Dana Auditorium in the E. H. Little Fine Arts Building at Queens University (1900 Selwyn Avenue, Charlotte, NC 28274). Our season runs from mid-August to mid-May.
Auditions
An audition is required to determine appropriate placement within the band and to determine performance level for solo assignments. The audition process also allows the conductor to learn more about you and tell you about other CCB members who may share your background.
Prospective players should prepare two brief selections to demonstrate tone quality, control, range, technical ability and musicianship. These may be solos, etudes or excerpts from band or orchestral parts.
